Trade Expectation for Appreciation

At yoga this morning, my teacher appropriately kept the focus on gratitude for what we have, what our bodies enable us to do, and appreciation of our accomplishments. She quoted Tony Robbins several times throughout our practice,


Trade your expectation for appreciation and the world changes instantly

She went on to explain that our yoga practice shouldn’t be about putting on a performance–an expectation of each pose looking perfect–but rather an in the moment growth, acknowledgment, and breath of strength and focus. Expand that thought to apply to not just yoga but life. Wow.

This thought was particularly profound for me this week and is really fueling a much needed re-focus. That quote hits on all my weak spots–high expectations and failing to live in the moment. I have such high expectations for myself as a mother, provider, and employee that I am constantly reaching for perfect outcomes and perfect moments on my own pre-planned, over-analyzed timetable. I also have very high expectations of other people. Is much really in our control though? I am a certifiable control freak, and even though I know I have to leave timing for most accomplishments to God, I still try and be the one with two hands gripping hardest on the wheel. I know I need to learn to let go of expectations and trade it with appreciation. Where can you let go of the expectations in your life?

What a perfect time of year, 3 days before Thanksgiving, to be reminded to appreciate the moments we have at that moment, instead of constantly trying to create future ones.  I hope you all are having a calm week, and have a feast of family and friends awaiting you on Thursday!
