Carb Cycling or How I Finally Found Food Freedom

It was Spring 2016. I was deeply immersed in Below the Fork and determined to be a successful entrepreneur. All my fellow¬†online health coaches were touting the latest “diet” craze: carb cycling. I joined free webinars, read various blog posts, watched tons of Periscope videos, and purchased books by Yuri Elkaim, and Chris & Heidi Powell about the joys of carb cycling.

I dabbled in carb cycling. But I didn’t get it.

Yuri focused so much on 24-hour intermittent fasting that I feared my old disordered eating habits would haunt me once again. Chris & Heidi Powell intimidated me with their professional-body-builder¬†levels of fitness because I didn’t see how that applied to¬†my regular life when¬†I didn’t care (nor currently care) about having 6-pack abs.

I just want to eat God-made foods the majority of the time and fit in my truth pants! Which is why I felt more confident than ever that my 80/20 plan was the best approach for me to love myself towards healthy. I continued to run Fitcamps with an elimination diet designed to gracefully lead us into the 80/20 lifestyle. I felt healthy.

But then I went back to my digital marketing career and started working a desk job 40 hours a week.

When you’re not teaching 4-5 group fitness classes a week in addition to your own workouts, your body changes real fast! I love my job, but it certainly is a new type of stress and crazy to balance working, mom’ing, wife’ing, Below the Fork’ing, and teaching 2 group fitness classes a week! I was starting to justify certain foods as being part of my¬†80% when I knew very well they should always remain in the 20% category for me. Damn you, wine & avocado oil potato chips!

There had to be a better way.

Whole30 was a failed experiment I never wanted to experience again. And I struggled to even follow my own Love Yourself Towards Healthy Fitcamp Program (eeek!) I looked again to my fellow online health coaches and was amazed to see they were continuing to promote carb cycling. Could it really be so hard if these ladies had remained this dedicated for so long? I decided to re-evaluate carb cycling by educating myself on all the finer points about it through various reputable resources.

That’s when I realized there wasn’t just “one way” to carb cycle. And once you figure out which aspects of carb cycling work best for you, transformation will happen!

There are so many different aspects to carb cycling and you do NOT need to incorporate them all. Keep it simple by alternating high and low carb days. Or mix in some of the more complex aspects like fasted cardio¬†or lower-carb days. In fact, that’s one of the reasons I love it so much. I can focus on my current health goals,¬†lifestyle, and psyche to determine what cycle pattern makes most sense for me in this season of my life. I have a more sedentary lifestyle than I did a year ago, and my psyche will always be one in which I cannot feel restricted or high-maintenance in public¬†(I have enough of that with needing to be gluten-free!)

I can still eat all the foods I love, but now I know¬†when they’re best to eat.¬†It’s a food freedom I have never experienced before!¬†

Carb cycling keeps me accountable and honest with what falls in the 80% category, and what falls in the 20% category. I purposely choose to have my high-carb days on Wednesday (mid-week slump) and Saturdays (party day haha), as well as make Sunday a reset day where I don’t track at all. This keeps my sanity at bay, and also causes minimal disruption to my family’s eating habits. I’m finding I’m making better food choices overall, and my mind and body are transforming for the best.¬†I’m enjoying weekly weight loss, less-to-no bloat, much less brain fog, more energy, and clearer skin.

I now offer a 2-Week¬†Carb Cycling Course to help other women find their food freedom. If you’d like to learn more,¬†click here.
